A shorter version of this article previously appeared in Sustained Magazine.

In 2006 the mood in Ashton Hayes was one of optimism and opportunity, with the newly formed “Going Carbon Neutral Project” residents really felt they could make a significant contribution to community led climate change action.

And, they probably did, but not in the way most resident expected. The story of the Ashton Hayes attempt to become carbon neutral has achieved worldwide coverage, culminating in the then pub landlord, Barry, sharing a couch with Graham Norton at the UK’s Live Earth tv coverage. But, it’s just that, a story – professionally crafted and distributed. And,there’s no denying that communities and individuals all over the world have been inspired by what they have seen and read.

Many village clubs and societies supported the Going Carbon Neutral Project: The Brownies started a lightbulb library so families could try out a range of energy saving light bulbs in their own homes.

Volunteers from the gardening club helped school children plant trees donated by the Woodland Trust and the Ash-Worth Timebank made sure that newsletters promoting the initiative were delivered to every household in the parish. They also hosted “carbon clinics” at monthly coffee mornings alongside the range of community activities they organise such as walking groups, pilates and Tai Chi.

In my research and conversations with other communities it’s pretty clear that the success of community carbon projects depends on the support of existing community groups and organisations. People who spend time with their neighbours develop trust and mutual concerns, so are more likely to share information and work together on projects, whether its cutting carbon or raising funds for play facilities.

Surprisingly, the Timebank and other voluntary groups rarely feature in media reports about my village these days. They are almost invisible, their continued and tacit support taken for granted . These groups are the social glue which binds small comunities together, and my village is rightly proud of its close knit, thriving community. The Government’s Rural Advocate, Stuart Burgess, visited Ashton Hayes in 2007 and observed that it wasn’t just a concern for the environment which inspired people who live here to reduce their energy demand, it was a sense of shared experience and a desire to save money too.

Through its community spirit Ashton Hayes has reputedly cut its energy demand by 20% in 4 years*. Yet, many other communities have been active in this field far longer, and achieved far deeper cuts. Up and down the country solar panels are appearing on the rooves of village halls, water wheels are creaking back into life on our rivers and food is being grown on any available land. These kinds of projects, where the community takes control of its energy and food production – not just the consumption – are increasingly common.

No doubt the community of Ashton Hayes would continue to thrive if the Parish Council abandoned its goal of carbon neutrality, but take away our Timebank, gardening club, ballet classes, football club etc and the situation would be different. rather than be seen as an “Environmntalist”, I’d prefer to be known as the person who willingly waters my neighbours plants when she goes on holiday or finds time for a cup of tea with the elderly gentleman who lives across the street. Find the communities where these kinds of things are commonplace and you’ll probable find a low carbon community, certainly one that could make rapid reductions in enery consumption if it chose to. This growth in low carbon communities is not just about the planet, it’s about the people. When we have respect and tolerance for our neighbours, care for the environment follows naturally.

Or,
Why you should only share what you want to share…

It seems facebook is awash with “shock horror” privacy invasion stories at the moment – again! Privacy issues on social networking sites aren’t new, but I’ve been surprised this week, by how many of my friends were unaware of how much of the information they share online can find it’s way around the web and how much the knowledge has upset them. I’m not sure why.
If you’re not sure what I mean, try typing your name into a search engine and watch those pictures, Just Giving messages etc appear before your eyes!
It’s true, there are bits of me all over the web, twitter, posterous, this blog and the list goes on (and on and on). But, unless we’ve met it’s unlikely you really “know” me. You may know that I’m married, I’m a mum, I work freelance and I live in Cheshire. If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you may know the name of my best friend, how she was cruelly snatched away from us before we were ready. You may know that I’m on sabbatical, that I’ve written several articles and contributed to a number of books on community responses to climate change. If you follow me on twitter, you’ll know that I have an aversion to the coffee sold at Crewe Station and that I tweet a lot on trains.
But, you are unlikely to read the really personal stuff here, names are often left unsaid, you probably don’t know how I vote (although there were cryptic clues in the red scarf / blue shawl tweets following David Cameron’s arrival in Downing St).
In short, you know what I choose to share. yes, I live a declarative lifestyle, but I choose what, when and where I reveal that information.
When I first fell into social networking I was given a useful piece of advice and it’s one I share when I run training or give talks on social networking for communities.

The “interweb” is a public space, treat it, and the people you meet there with respect and don’t say or do anything you wouldn’t be happy to hear repeated or attributed to you.

Think of twitter, facebook, myspace etc as a the conversations you mght have with a friend on the bus, would you be comfortable if the person sitting behind you overheard what you said?
I’m happy to share bits of my personality online, but on my terms. You might say twitter is my “public face” where I talk about work, communities and some of the fun stuff I get up to, it’s where I sometimes share my frustrations with the modern world, give a heads up to my followers about forthcoming events or interesting snippets of information. Facebook, however, is my private space. It’s unlikely you’ll be accepted as a “friend” unless we’ve met, my privacy settings are constantly updated and reviewed (I’m sorry, but I don’t want my employers or my daughter’s friends seeing photos of me letting my hair down at parties, so I choose carefully who can see what and when).
Having said all that, social networks have enriched my personal and my professional life, I wouldn’t be without them and I actively encourage friends and family to try online communications and find out what suits them. yes, there will be times when you let your guard down, when you are indiscreet (I know, I’ve been there, done that and learnt the hard way).
And finally, this hoo hah is nothing new, and the last word should go to Ed Mitchell who wrote this some time back.
Ed’s path and mine have crossed several times online, but we’ve only met once – and really that’s a (very innocent) “you had to be there to appreciate it” kind of story, that won’t be revealed here!!!

Can’t believe I’m back at work next week after a long and much needed rest! I’m not venturing far, a day at the always inspiring Trafford Hall, where I hope there will be time to look at the organic gardens. I’m hoping my session won’t turn into a “death by powerpoint” as I have some great photos from new community projects to share. Meanwhile, I have not wasted my sabbatical as you can see….

I am beginning to think the making and baking side of my life needs a blog of its own….

A while back I blogged and tweeted about a photo shoot I was going on with my friend Andrea. Well, here’s a sneaky peek at some of the results(there are more – but you’ll see them another time in another place). As you can see, Andrea has worked her magic and made me look like some glamorous Cheshire wife (if only…), she also has the rare honour of capturing me smiling at the camera while sober, and for that alone, she deserves a medal.

Call for Ideas for third sector projects working to green public services.
Innovation Exchange is seeking high-potential third sector innovation projects that could participate in its new Green Next Practice Programme
This programme will provide brokerage support to five or six third sector innovation projects with the potential to green public services. The projects might seek to deliver public services, work for public services or influence public service strategies. The Innovation Exchange believes that public services can play a leading role in greening the UK.
The programme has six things to offer the third sector: practical support, links to policy-makers and investors, links to public services, coaching and facilitation, networking events to develop and share your work; and promotion through Innovation Exchange.
If you’re a third sector project working to green public services then apply by Wednesday, 2nd June 2010 for the chance to participate.
Any questions regarding the Green Next Practice Programme should be directed to Raj Cheema, 020 7259 1368.

So, my kitchen is finally finished, I’ve scrubbed, sanded, primed, undercoated and emulsioned until my nails are shredded! The colour is “pale cashmere” – no – I’m none the wiser either, but I would say it’s most like what my mother used to call “taupe”. It is most certainly clean, no longer smells of wet dog and perfectly matches the new cooker! Oh – and for the taller visitor – or those of you have made the mistake of glancing skywards in my tiny house, I have even repainted the ceiling so now it’s no longer chip fat brown and burnt toast black, but crisp white and gleaming!
All that’s left to do now is sew new curtains. For years I’ve harboured a secret fetish for Vanessa Arbuthnot’s fabrics and promised myself that one day I would use one of her linens for kitchen curtains.

Surely ten years isn’t too long for a kitchen window to be naked? And you have to admit, it’s a beautiful fabric. I’ve chosen Fern and Dragonfly in speedwell (seen here)

It’s my favourite shade of blue.
Next I’m off to use the powers of the internet to find instructions on making a roman blind. Then, whether it rains or not I am going to plant out the first of the summer lettuces.

While I’m busy painting my kitchen, here’s a guest post from Rachel McGladdery, with her thoughts on modern living. If you are a parent, I’m sure you’ll have some sympathy with her point of view. You can get in touch with Rachel via twitter or leave a comment here.
I’ll be back when I have figured out how to justify the cost of my new lovely curtain material!!
The New Austerity
I read with interest (and not a little panic) about other people’s gratuitous spending in the run up to last Christmas.
I have four children, who had been harassing me since the clocks went back about what they wanted this year. The harassment took various forms, from my eldest boy (14) who brought me the catalogue, showed me a variety of extortionate jeans and sweat tops emblazoned with Brand Names and asked me “What’s the budget then?” to the youngest girl (3) who sat in front of the television shouting “Want that, want that!” at anything featuring pink, fur or sparkles.
My younger son, at 12, is on the autism spectrum and wanted an axolotl or a corn snake. He asks for them each year and so far I haven’t relented as I am too aware that his small sisters will be more than happy to release them or feed them tinsel, plus, I don’t agree with keeping animals (exotic or otherwise) caged. And neither does Santa!
I was aiming for a small scale Christmas. For the past decade my sisters and I have lovingly spent November and December knitting, baking and crafting presents for each other in an attempt to save money and to regain the ideals of the season that, to be perfectly honest, we didn’t have for starters back in the 70s when we were growing up.
It just strikes me that we all have Too Much Stuff. it appals me that even by Boxing Day, most of the children’s presents can be found in bits on the bedroom floor or jammed in the vacuum cleaner hose. It is such a devastating waste of money, and time and thought.
A few years ago, I admitted to my ageing grandma that we were late to school one day as I couldn’t find my son’s shoes. She was shocked to hear that in a 3 bed-roomed house I could lose a shoe, she then gave me the lecture….. she had raised 4 small children too , she laid out their clothes each night before going to bed and never, ever lost a single item. It was unthinkable, things like shoes were far too precious to be allowed to be mislaid. I felt chagrin, all absolutely true. Now that we can buy a new pair of socks for a quid, we have lost the gentle art of darning, we feel no shame at chucking away a worn pair of shoes that as a child, would have been ‘Araldited’ and polished back into usefulness.
I think the time is ripe for a sea change. We should embrace the spirit of Make Do and Mend, as our grandparents did.
I asked Grandma about the realities of raising a family in the 50s. Each child had a set of school clothes, a good set for parties and the like, and a set of playing out clothes. She laundered once a week apart from ‘smalls’ which were hand washed and dried in front of the fire (I thought of my brood and the huge washing piles they produce, incapable of keeping an outfit clean for less than a few hours, not to mention the clothes washed, ironed and put away in drawers that end up on the floor in the usual 7.30 dash for clean boxers and PE shorts) My mum and her brothers and sister wore pinnies in the house to keep their clothes clean, so they stayed wearable till Friday when they were washed. Imagine the bedrooms I thought, just a drawer for underwear and 3 outfits (plus coat) in the wardrobe. In fact, in my grandma’s house in the 50s, there was only one wardrobe, in the master bedroom, simply no need for one in each room. Toys were put away when not in use. Books lived on bookshelves. Simple. Tidy. Environmentally friendly! It seems unthinkable right now that we could endeavour to be like that in the noughties but, thinking about it, it seemed unthinkable in the wasteful 80s that we would all be growing fruit and veg in the back garden and keeping chickens, yet not only is this not looked upon as being cranky, it’s pretty much the norm, it’s even reached children’s telly and how’s that for mainstream?
I could throw out three quarters of the contents of my children’s wardrobes, I could go out now (if I had the dosh) and buy my children’s next outfit from a quality outfitter, forgoing the 3 for a tenner shops. hey, I could even scour the charity shops for decent hardwearing clobber then make sure it is well looked after, mended as necessary, given the space to hang it deserves, I could make my children wear pinnies and refuse to put the washer on more than once a week. I could tidy their rooms in half an hour, spend a fraction of the usual time ironing. I could use that free time to dig the garden over, handcraft exquisite presents for next year, make my own sloe gin, jam, Christmas cake, bask in my own self-righteousness.
Hang on, maybe I’m getting ahead of myself here. I don’t for one minute think that I could do this unilaterally. Though I’m happy to be a pioneer of the New Austerity, I doubt my kids are….this is something that needs to be embraced by the whole community, The basic ideology is sound though , and infinitely feasible. I urge us all, this year, to eschew the cheap sweat shop tee-shirts that will twist into unrecognisable shapes after the first wash anyway, save that tenner and wait till you have the where-with-all to buy something properly finished and launder it with care. We can do this people! We can beat the recession and the washday blues in one fell swoop!
Now ‘scuse me, I’m off to the Charity shop to find a well made pair of jeans in waist 26, then I’ll sit in front of the wireless and hand embroider a brand name on the bum, can’t wait to see his little face on Christmas morning next year!
I treated myself to a new dress, but couldn’t justify new shoes or bag. So, I decided to make one. It took me a couple of hours to remember my crochet skills (my Dad taught me when I was about 7 and after a brief flirtation with punk rock inspired crochet jumpers as a teenager, I haven’t really done much since).
The pattern is adapted from a design by Ileana Rodrigues in Debbie Stoller’s book “Happy Hooker”.
At first, it looked a bit like a mis-shapen dish rag

but after blocking

sewing in a lining (fabric remnant: 25p from Chestermarket) and adding a fabric rose, I’m really pleased with the result, and, no-one else will have a bag like it!
Best of all, the embellishment can be changed to match any outfit:
