I love opening Christmas cards and today was very special, I received a Christmas card from Jane and Simon Berry, two people who have created an imaginative campaign to “get Coca-Cola to use its distribution muscle in developing countries to save children’s lives”. I can’t really do their story justice – Simon tells it so much better here. But, in brief, the heart of the idea is the Aidpod, (as pictured in the image above). It fits in the un-used space between Coca-Cola bottles, so when the crates arrive in African villages, the Aidpods arrive too. If you’ve been to Africa (or any developing country), you’ll know that you can buy Coca-Cola almost anywhere, whilst in these same countries 1 in 5 children die before their 5th birthday from simple, preventable causes like dehydration from diarrhoea. The Aidpod is designed to take advantage of this distribution system to ensure much needed medicines, hydration salts and other supplies get to where they are needed.
Simon and the Colalife team (all volunteers) still need a lot of help to ensure Coca-Cola take this on, so please, make your 2010 resolution to get involved. You can find Colalife on facebook, twitter and youtube or visit their supporter’s page on the website for more information.
Merry Christmas Simon and all the best for 2010.
